Oil’s Fair In Love and War

So, it has come to this.

Through study and observance of what is NOT being said by both parties in the American political system, I have reached a disturbing conclusion. For all the talk of Iraq being a mess, for all the talk of bringing troops home, for all the talk of it not making us any safer here at home, the war drums continue to beat. Why?

Perhaps we simply can’t leave.

I’ve not changed my stance on the war, not a bit. But I find myself stuck now. We’re in the shit in the Middle East, no one argues that. But perhaps just how much we are ALL in the shit is downplayed by by all parties involved. Specifically because the stakes are so high. We’ve seen large(er than Vatican City) bases built and more troops sent over and for what? Why?

“We cannot leave Iraq until we win.”

That is perhaps the most pervasive talking point and it resides at the crux of my revelation. Now, why would otherwise sound of mind military and civilian sector personnel insist on repeating something so childish and shortsighted? Is it truly because they believe there is a chance that we can ‘win’ in Iraq? Do they really believe in taking away freedoms at home to give it to other peoples? Perhaps some are that naive. But, make no mistake. The original thrust of this argument, that we cannot leave until we ‘win’, is about oil and resources. And there’s a very good chance this is the end of the game for the US if we chose or are forced to leave.

The United States is in a fight for it’s life, and it’s approaching it the wrong way. The United States proper reached peak oil production in the 1970’s (remember the gas crisis) and the entire world hit peak oil right around 2004-05, based on projections. This mean that all oil mined, extracted and refined from the point of peak forward only becomes more and more expensive. This is best illustrated by the recent unprecedented 10-day spike of $5 for a barrel of oil. This puts oil at $55 a barrel, up a whopping $20/barrell from this time in 2006. The executives that run the United States saw this coming and knew they would need to seize what oil is left to gradually bring the oil-based economy into recession and then collapse. This way, controls could be put in place to maintain power over the populace instead of a sudden crash that would plunge the States into chaos.

With rapidly developing markets for oil in the East (India and China) and their larger populations fueling this demand, there has been talk over the past few years from oil-bearing nations about moving away from a dollar based oil market. This scares the hell out of the executives in the United States, because our ENTIRE economy is based on oil. Cheap oil doesn’t even have to run out, only become scarce, before major problems will develop. This will be bigger than having to get in line for gas for your car. This will make entire parts of our country inhabitable, due to lack of access to cheap heat/AC, entire urban centers reduced to ghost towns because of a lack of arable farmland to support it’s population (Don’t believe it? Check out our nations small towns. Since the mid 80’s they’ve been literally rotting away; if they aren’t swallowed up by urban sprawl, they are left to rot and eventually die out.), and impassible roads due to an inability of the state level departments to keep up with demand.

Our way of life is ending with a grinding halt, and it seems there are still lots of people who don’t know, or don’t care.
