The End Of An Era: Notes on how to weather the impending storm of post-election violence.

“It is astounding to hear rightwing talkshow bloviators rant about the predicament of the Bush administration being caused by its failure to carry out the true conservative agenda. For there never has been and never will be a more doctrinally faithful instrument of the creed.”

- Simon Schama, “Nowhere Man: A Farewell To Dubya, All-Time Loser In Presidential History”

When you study the shadows as much as I do, there’s a few common threads, common rules you pick up. If there is a ruling elite, they do in fact have clandestine rules they adhere to. Tenants and rituals which they do not openly share with the rabbleous proletariat. There seems to be an inherent compulsion within those allowed at the levers of power, that they almost have to tell you what they wish to do to with the ever-sleeping public. That way, if you’re not bright enough to pick up on how you’re about to be scammed, it’s your own fault. In their eyes, playing for keeps means everything, losing is not an option.

This is why conspiracy realists are always searching, always hunting for the breadcrumbs left behind. In the past, it has been exceedingly difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. But with the advent of 24 hour cable news cycles and their voracious appetites for fresh ’stories’, the mouthpieces for the far recesses of the hegemon have become so bold as to almost be talking out loud about their plans like a terrible Bond villain from the 80’s.

For example:

“Polls are getting hard to read at this point,” MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski remarked on Sunday’s edition of Morning Joe.

“Well, they are because they’re all, almost all in Barack Obama’s corner at this point so if you are the Barack Obama campaign you really only have two things to worry about,” Scarborough replied. “One, complacency on part of your supporters which can be very, very damaging impact on the campaign or number two, that there’s a ghost in the machine. That somehow these polls are going to be incorrect like the polls that assured Barack Obama was going to lock up the Democratic nomination after New Hampshire.

“Of course we know that didn’t happen,” Scarborough added. “So…”

Scarborough warns of “Ghost In The Machine”

Why would Scarborough bring this up? Putting aside that The Scar frequently revels in Obama related Schadenfreude, this is a dubious nod towards the many, many stories of electronic voting machine troubles that have been cropping up all over the nation. Joe states it matter-of-factly, with no hint of wink or nod. Joe wants you, the faithful viewer to know that this ghost in the machine is very, very real.

Can’t scare the kids later if they don’t already know about the Boogeyman.

Paranoia? Over-analyzation? If there’s one thing the merging of the corporate and government worlds has taught the doting pupil, it’s that coincidences of this nature fall in the same camp with Jersey Virgins and a Cubs pennant win: not even a remote possibility. Robert Anton Wilson infamously referred to it as “seeing the fjnords”. Joe’s verbal nod is just one indicator in a rapidly growing horde of oft-ignored stories to emerge in the past 2-4 months. There is a very good possibility that there will be so much vote fraud (from both sides) happening Tuesday, that we will not know the 44th president of the United States until Friday. And the echo chamber for the right is prepping it’s audiences for the dance with plenty of pre-party Kool Aid.

Right now, it comes down to who will be taking to the streets in anger. The nation can only pick one candidate, and that means there will be people who will feel like they lost something extremely important when all the votes are in. Emotional investment does not bode well for the fatalist, or those around him/her. So, it is in this spirit that I offer the following to those of us who are tasked with people possessing poor judgment in the face of perceived loss over the next few days.

Know yourself. Knowledge is power in the information age. Remember that, and no man can bring harm that you do not wish to. Surround yourself with fellow True Seekers, and form a union that makes survival imminent, regardless of the variables at play.

Krishnamurti wrote that “It is not a sign of good health to be well adjusted to a sick society”. This describes perfectly the looming storm cloud on America’s electoral horizon. You and I are intelligent enough to know that what evils may come to the surface in the next days will be fleeting if the whole does not give in to baser instincts and fan the fires. But that will not stop the many who have forgotten themselves in the Great And Ultimate National Team Sport. Theirs is bloodlust for the win, with no regard for the day after. And the irrational have no choice but to vent their anger in destructive and meaningless ways.

I, for one, plan to dance in the streets if the American People win. But that will not be decided Tuesday. Tuesday is the beginning. Which is why you should thank whatever gods you believe in that the time of the ignorant is almost over. We The People have been silent too long.

Si se puede.
